But what about the technology behind the site, which allows anyone with a webcam to randomly and anonymously interact with a never-ending series of people? (read more...)

The recent introduction of Apple's iPad has re-opened discussion around Flash and Flash support, or rather, Apple devices' lack thereof. While this discussion brings to light the conflict between the two corporate agendas of Adobe and Apple, it isn't really about Flash or a methodology that Apple picked for video delivery. What it does begin to lay out, however, is a much larger discussion about online video. The discussion widens even further as supporters of alternative technologies and approaches like Silverlight, HTML5, and others begin to chime in with their thoughts on the current and future states of online video. Imagine if you need to prepare the internet infrastructure needed to support a live event that happens once in a blue moon. You can't buy the infrastructure, since you'll need it just once. The unpredictable nature of the demand for rich media files, coupled with the amount of bandwidth needed to deal with a video that suddenly "goes viral" combine to create the circumstances for an event that I sometimes refer to as a "success disaster." This happens when you create something cool and hope that it will catch on (bringing with it at least a modicum of fame and fortune), but when it does catch on you are faced with a wall of traffic that you cannot hope to satisfy. It is expensive and impractical to have spare servers standing by in the off chance that you are faced with a sudden demand for one of your media products.
An on-demand, web-scale solution can help you to sidestep this particular problem. The Wowza Media Server Pro...
